Environmental Policy of Innsbruck Airport
Preventive environmental protection is an essential part of the corporate strategy of Tiroler Flughafenbetriebsgesellschaft m.b.H.
Innsbruck Airport has repeatedly set milestones in environmental matters – not only for Austria, but for the European aviation sector as a whole.
As early as 1990, Innsbruck became the first airport in Austria to ban take-offs and landings of noisy Chapter II aircraft. Through negotiations with the airlines, the airport has ensured that almost exclusively Chapter IV aircraft – the quietest and most environmentally friendly category – operate to and from Innsbruck today.
Innsbruck Airport has the strictest and most restrictive operating hours of all Austrian commercial airports.
There is a strict interpretation of night-time flight restrictions (only life-saving transplant and air ambulance flights are permitted).
Noise-reducing arrival and departure procedures are in place.
In 2004, Innsbruck Airport became the first (and still the only) airport in Austria to introduce “noise-related landing charges” in order to penalise louder aircraft types.
Data from the three noise monitoring stations confirms that aircraft operations at Innsbruck Airport are quieter than any major road in the city of Innsbruck.
The number of scheduled and charter flight movements has remained almost constant since 2000 (and has been noticeably declining since 2011).
There is a cap on scheduled and charter flight movements during peak winter charter weekends.
Ultralight aircraft are prohibited.
In 2000, Innsbruck Airport became the first airport in Austria to implement an environmental management system in accordance with EMAS, received certification, and has since been authorised to use the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EU Eco-Audit) label.
As part of the EMAS re-validation in 2012, a recertification according to ISO 14001 was also completed. Compliance with these standards is verified annually by external environmental auditors.
In June 2013, Innsbruck Airport received the EMAS Award from the Austrian Ministry of Life for the second time, following the first award in 2007. Innsbruck Airport is thus the first airport in Austria to receive this prestigious environmental distinction twice.
