Security check

In aviation, security is of the highest priority. The concept of airport security has been revised multiple times by the European Commission and national authorities.

Guidelines According to Commission Regulation (EU) No 2015/1998
This executive order of the European Commission regulates, among other things, security controls for passengers and their luggage.

Passengers must undergo security controls before they are allowed beyond security (GATE, Duty Free). During the security control, passenger’s hand luggage will be inspected for restricted articles.

Please inform security personnel if you are a user of a cardiac or neural pacemaker. If this is the case, you are NOT to use the metal detector equipment. Instead, an inspection by hand via patting and of the shoes will be performed. Passengers with implants, such as artificial hips or knees, will be required to undergo a security check by hand and a shoe inspection after passing through the metal detector (always triggers an alarm).

Beginning 1 September 2015, additional security regulations with regard to explosives controls will come in to effect in European, and therefore Austrian, commercial airports. Passengers, their hand luggage and electronic devices must be tested by hand with special paper strips for traces of explosives.

Hand luggage and items carried must be x-rayed. Electronic devices(such as laptops, tablets, etc.) and liquids (liquids in max. 100 ml containers in transparent, re-sealable 1-litre plastic bags), baby or diet foods and medications must be shown to security personnel separately. Prior to flying, please inform yourself about the safety regulations for hand luggage and the list of restricted items in hand luggage. The list of restricted items is exhaustive. Additionally, similar restricted items that may also be capable of causing injury or damage in the airplane are restricted in hand luggage.

Liquid regulations for passengers

Liquids can be defined as “liquids, aerosols, and gels” including body-care products such as toothpastes, creams, lotions, hairsprays, shaving cream, perfume, etc., but also various foodstuffs such as, e.g., jams, honey, soft cheeses.

As was previously the case, each passenger may take liquids in max. 100 ml containers on board. These must fit in a one litre, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag so that it may easily be closed!

Medications and special dietary foods such as baby food, which are needed for the duration of the trip, may still be taken on board. For these products, authenticity must be proven (e.g. proof of the child’s age up to a maximum of two years old or a confirmation from a doctor or prescription for medication or special dietary needs). Medications, baby or special dietary foods in containers larger than 100 ml will be additionally tested.

Duty-free purchases for worldwide in duty free or on board an aircraft must be packed in an intact, manipulation-proof bag and be presented for inspection. Adequate proof of purchase from a duty-free shop or on board shopping must be clearly visible within the bag.

Security controls for animals

With this provision, BM.I has made EU – VO 2015/1998 Point 4.1.1.6binding for all Austrian commercial airports.

Passengers are permitted to transport small animals in the passenger cabin, however, security conditions must be met. Since 1 March 2015, animals must be scanned in order to rule out the potential threat of implanted items.As an alternative variant, this regulation was adapted in the interest of passengers and animals.

For the purpose of gentle security controls for animals, a special “animal metal detector” has been made available at the Innsbruck Airport. The detector frame utilises magnets (similar to security controls for passengers) but is specially calibrated for animals. This means that animals carrying any metal would be recognised by the detector.

Restricted items

The European Commission also legislates permitted articles which may be carried on board an airplane in hold luggage, articles which may, under certain circumstances (e.g. pressure, temperature, or altitude difference), cause severe damage to the aircraft.
