About the history of the airport

Since the end of 2023, work has been underway on an extraordinary airport project: around 10,000 photographs spanning five decades (from 1960 to 2003) are currently being reviewed, sorted, digitised and tagged at Innsbruck Airport. The aim is to preserve the entire collection for the future and make it publicly accessible via the Innsbruck City Archives. The project is expected to take three to five years.

In the process, new images are being discovered and long-forgotten ones rediscovered – a fascinating task carried out with great attention to detail in cooperation with Digitalfuchs and the Innsbruck City Archives. We would like to express our sincere thanks to Dr Tanja Chraust, the airport’s aviation historian, and Armin Stotter, former Head of the Traffic Department and a true walking encyclopaedia of the airport. Both dedicate a great deal of time and commitment to the airport photo archive project.
