Press Release – 30 September 2024

Between 1 December 2024 and 26 March 2025, Iberia will operate direct scheduled flights from Innsbruck to the Spanish capital Madrid for the first time, on Wednesdays and Sundays. The route will be served by a modern Airbus A320neo with a capacity of around 180 passengers. The two weekly direct connections on Wednesdays and Sundays are ideal for city trips to Spain’s attractive capital. With more than three million inhabitants, Madrid is not only Europe’s highest-located capital and the seat of the Spanish royal family, but also an important cultural and university city.

Spain has also developed very positively in recent years as a source market for guests travelling to Tyrol. As a result, the two weekly flights are also of particular interest for local tourism. With the introduction of the Madrid route, Innsbruck Airport becomes part of the Iberia network, gaining access to another international hub. Madrid is an especially important transfer airport for connections to North and South America.

Iberia is a member of the oneworld airline alliance and part of the International Airlines Group (IAG), which also includes British Airways. This allows Iberia and British Airways flights to be ideally combined via their respective hubs in Madrid and London.

Positive response from business and tourism

Tourism, Economic Affairs and Investments Councillor Mario Gerber commented:
“Including Innsbruck in the Iberia network is a clear sign of the growing importance of our airport. The connection to the international hub of Madrid boosts tourism and opens up new economic opportunities. This further strengthens Tyrol’s position in international competition. In addition, the new flight connection creates potential for increased trade relations and cultural exchange.”

Barbara Plattner, Managing Director of Innsbruck Tourism, added:
“Easy accessibility is a key decision factor when choosing a holiday destination. Spain has developed enormously as a source market, with overnight stays increasing by more than 40% compared to the pre-Covid period – our long-term activities are clearly bearing fruit. The new connection with two weekly rotations is a valuable incentive for city trips, and events such as the Winter Dance Festival around Enrique Gasa Valga have also generated strong interest in Spain. We therefore see considerable potential in this new route, especially as Madrid now provides improved access to Latin America.”

Iberia also commented on the new route:
“We are delighted to welcome Innsbruck to our route network. It is Iberia’s 143rd destination. In recent years, we have seen growing interest among our customers in winter destinations, and we are committed to offering the best possible connections from Spain, with new routes that diversify our destination portfolio and enhance the value of the Madrid hub.”
