On 1 June, Innsbruck Airport officially celebrated its 100th anniversary. The anniversary celebrations continued on Thursday evening with a special event: around 60 enthusiastic walkers were able to experience on foot a perspective that is usually reserved for pilots.
The idea for the Airport Walk came from Airport Managing Director Marco Pernetta himself:
“At our Open Day on 26 October, visitors can admire aircraft up close. I liked the idea of offering, on a smaller scale, the opportunity to experience the runway itself.”
For this purpose, the 2,000-metre runway was closed during the evening hours and transformed into a “pedestrian zone of a special kind”. 100 curious walkers from across Tyrol were selected via a prize draw in cooperation with Life Radio – ultimately, around 60 participants braved the weather. During the 1st Airport Walk, however, the weather improved, allowing both children and adults to complete the approximately 3-kilometre route in dry conditions.
“It was a unique experience,” was the unanimous verdict at the end of the 1st Airport Walk.
