Eurowings Launches New Winter Connection
In bright sunshine, the first Eurowings flight EW9714—an Airbus A320 from Düsseldorf—landed on time today at 1:00 p.m. Passengers and crew were welcomed right on the apron with a special Tyrolean reception upon arrival. The direct service to and from Düsseldorf will operate twice weekly throughout the winter season, complementing Eurowings’ existing flight offering to and from Hamburg.
Eurowings is a long-standing airline partner of Innsbruck Airport and part of the Lufthansa Group, currently serving around 150 destinations in more than 50 countries. As of today, Innsbruck has once again been included in Eurowings’ extensive route network from Düsseldorf after a longer hiatus. With a flight time of just 1 hour and 10 minutes, the route provides an optimal connection between the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and Tyrol. The strong demand was already evident on today’s inaugural flight, which recorded 136 arriving and 87 departing passengers.
Many winter guests from the German market will benefit from this attractive travel option. As Michael Händel, Vice President Network Management and Airport Relations at Eurowings, explains: “Winter sports enthusiasts from North Rhine-Westphalia can now reach the Tyrolean Alps faster and more directly than ever before—thanks to the new direct connection between Düsseldorf and Innsbruck. Germany’s most populous federal state now has a direct link to one of Europe’s most attractive winter sports regions. Innsbruck impresses with spectacular slopes, alpine flair and genuine Tyrolean hospitality—and we are confident that this route will quickly become one of the most popular winter connections.”
On the Tyrolean side, Barbara Plattner, Managing Director of Innsbruck Tourism, underlines the importance of flights to Germany: "Our aim is to ensure good year-round occupancy for businesses in the region and thus create sustainable added value. A strong winter season is essential for this. North Rhine-Westphalia and northern Germany are among our most important regions within our strongest source market by far: together, they account for almost 25% of all overnight stays from Germany. The connections to Düsseldorf and Hamburg therefore provide strong momentum for Innsbruck. They significantly ease travel to the region—while at the same time opening up two attractive city destinations for Tyroleans.” Düsseldorf also serves as an additional transfer hub within the Lufthansa Group, offering convenient onward connections to many attractive international destinations.
Both passengers and crew members of the inaugural flight experienced the launch of the new connection very positively. They were delighted by the warm welcome awaiting them after landing at Innsbruck Airport. In bright sunshine, they were greeted with traditional gingerbread, a genuine Tyrolean schnapps and a personal welcome by Innsbruck Airport Managing Director Marco Pernetta.
